Study Purpose

International research has shown that the way people buy, prepare and consume their food can have wide ranging impacts on their health and finances.

The FoodImage research study, funded by the USDA, will test a smartphone application (app), called FoodImage, as a way to better understand how people interact with food in their daily lives.

About the Study

Participants in the FoodImage research study will attend a training session at Pennington Biomedical to learn how to use the iPhone app. Some participants will use the app and a paper food record at Pennington Biomedical. Participants will then use the app for up to an additional 14 days on their own. Participants will complete questionnaires to conclude the study.

Study Design

Number of Visits:

  • Up to 3 visits to the Pennington Biomedical outpatient clinic


  • Questionnaires
  • Focus group or interview (some participants only)
  • Training to use the iPhone app

Study Qualifications

To qualify for this research study, participants should:

  • Be 18 to 65 years of age
  • Have a BMI of 18.5 – 50 calculate your BMI
  • Conduct some of the grocery shopping and food preparation for household
  • Have an iPhone and be willing to use it for study purposes (app download and usage will use a small amount of data)
  • Have a regularly used email address

Study Duration

Participation in this research study will last up to 4 weeks.


Compensation of up to $205 is available for completion of the study.
