Study Purpose

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication in preventing future cardiac events by lowering blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

About the Study

Do you have Type 2 diabetes?

If so, you may be eligible to participate in a diabetes research study at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Individuals with Type 2 diabetes are at a greater risk of developing heart problems which can lead to serious cardiac events. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication in individuals who have recently experienced a cardiovascular event.

Study Design

Number of visits:

  • 1 Screening visit
  • 28 Clinic visits
    • 19 outpatient clinic visits
    • 9 phone calls

Study procedures:

  • Daily subcutaneous injections
  • Daily glucose monitoring
  • Daily diary
  • Blood draw

Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups:

  • Lixisenatide injection
  • Placebo injection

Participants will give themselves a daily injection for approximately 3.5 years. All study-related medicine and procedures will be done at no cost to participants.

Study Qualifications

  • Age: 30 years and older
  • Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
  • Recently experienced a cardiac event or have health problems
