The Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC), a research facility of the Louisiana State University System, is a dynamic and world class research center undergoing a major expansion in its research programs. The mission of PBRC is to improve health through research in nutrition and in disease prevention. Areas of research strength include cancer, botanicals, obesity, type 2 diabetes, exercise and health, fetal programming, genetics, neurobiology, neurodegeneration, nutrient sensing, healthy aging and stem cell biology. PBRC promotes research through institutional support of multiple cores that include microscopy, genomics, proteomics, and transgenic cores. In addition, the co-existence of active population, clinical and basic research programs offers unique opportunities for translational research. The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is seeking a superior candidate to fill the role of Director for the new Biomedical Imaging Center currently under construction. The Director will be a fulltime faculty member at Pennington Biomedical Research Center and will pursue an independent research career in addition to directing clinical imaging. The Director will be responsible for expanding and developing a multi-disciplinary clinical imaging research team that will: • Direct and expand the current Imaging Core - the Imaging Core currently supports the clinical research activities at PBRC with existing 3T MRI/MRS, DXA, whole body NMR body composition, ultrasound and CT (off-site). Current capabilities include MNS [31P and proton] and body/brain imaging as well as advanced body composition analysis. • Support the expanding clinical research base - the Center has a new 90,000 sq. ft. clinical research building which opened July 2010 with an adjacent Biomedical Imaging Center (20,000 sq.ft.), which is slated to open in February 2012. The BIC will house up to three MRI/MRS plus CT/PET with room for future expansion including support of the LaCATS Center (www.lacats.org). Opportunities also include potential for expanding research at the recently created Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention. • Development of new modalities and methodologies - the Director will interface with clinical scientists from PBRC and across the state to develop new image acquisition and analysis methods and implement these within the clinical research setting in the context of multi-center studies.
MD and/or PhD with documented imaging expertise (radiology, nuclear medicine /PET physician, imaging scientist, medical subspecialist with imaging experience). Board eligibility and/or certification is desirable • Mid to senior level with administrative experience • Outstanding track-record in peer-reviewed publications and experience in scientific presentations. • Ability to establish independent research and secure external funding • Proven expertise in at least one imaging modality (MRI, PET/SPECT, CT) • Experience in a therapeutic area related to the mission of the Center is preferred (obesity, diabetes, neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, aging) • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
