BATON ROUGE, LA - Since 2005, the Botanical Research Center (BRC) at Pennington Biomedical Research Center has hosted an annual free education event targeted to the community at large to promote awareness of ongoing botanical research at the Center. This year, the Botanical Community Education event is scheduled on Tuesday, February 25th, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM. Registration will be opening soon. Register online at www.pbrc.edu/backyardremedies.

The Botanical Research Center (BRC) was created in 2005 through a grant from the National Institutes of Health, and is a national center for the study of botanicals and metabolic syndrome. Since its inception, the BRC has significantly advanced the study of botanicals and metabolic syndrome.

The goal of the Botanical Research Center is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of botanicals in addressing the pathophysiologic mechanisms that lead to the development of insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome. The specific aims of the Botanical Research Center are:

  • To promote a collaborative and interactive research environment to develop an internationally-recognized center of excellence in the area of botanicals and mechanisms of metabolic disease.
  • To identify and further study botanicals with potential efficacy in metabolic syndrome, to identify their bioactive constituents, to standardize and optimize those botanicals, to provide necessary pre-clinical and mechanisms of action data, and to translate the foregoing findings into clinical studies in humans.
  • To expand the critical mass of investigators addressing botanical research by identifying, recruiting and mentoring promising young investigators.

    The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is at the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the triggers of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. It is a campus of Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical and population research. The research enterprise at Pennington Biomedical includes approximately 80 faculty and more than 25 post-doctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories supported by lab technicians, nurses, dietitians, and support personnel, and 13 highly specialized core service facilities. Pennington Biomedical's more than 500 employees perform research activities in state-of-the-art facilities on the 222-acre campus located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
